ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation (Satoshi Kikuchi, President & CEO; headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; hereinafter "CTC") and ITOCHU Techno-Solutions America, Inc. have deployed a big data infrastructure for YJ America, Inc. (hereinafter "YJ America"), an US subsidiary of Yahoo! JAPAN Corporation (hereinafter "Yahoo! JAPAN"). YJ America has deployed 1,200 servers and 120-petabyte storage of Open Compute Project (hereinafter "OCP" )*1 specification. CTC delivered fully integrated rack level OCP solution to YJ America.
To achieve the sustainable growth, Yahoo! JAPAN has set up the three business areas of internet Advertisement, e-Commerce and finance/settlement as its core business strategy. Although the company has been investing in the technology and facilities to improve the target accuracy and promote personalization by utilizing big data, the processing capability required for big data utilization is also on the rise leading to an increase in capital investment. Therefore, in order to suppress the growth in capital investment, Yahoo! JAPAN has launched the data center in United States in April 2015 and has been successful to reduce its energy cost, but their next challenge was to reduce the cost by adopting new technologies in the infrastructure area.
OCP is a project started by Facebook, Inc. in 2011 to design and provide the best hardware for large-scale data centers. CTC in collaboration with Facebook, Inc. and the companies called Tier 1 that operates the hyper-scale IT infrastructure has conducted the technological review and verification support before introducing to Yahoo! JAPAN. CTC and Yahoo! JAPAN in cooperation with ODM*2 who manufactures OCP specified standard servers and storages, and with the relevant vendors have achieved the infrastructure procurement with the competitiveness equivalent to Tier 1 has achieved.
Yahoo! JAPAN is considering further expansion in the deployment of OCP Products in United States. The company is also planning to get involved in the joint technology development and evaluation with Tier 1 companies in United States, aiming to improve its technology level further. Going forward, CTC will continue providing support for Yahoo! JAPAN's approach to the new technologies and provide cutting-edge technologies to customers making the most of its strength as a total IT-Solution provider.
- *1OCP: Originated from the fact that the specifications designed by Facebook, Inc. to achieve the greatest efficiencies for data center server infrastructure were made open source. The project establishes the optimum hardware for the data center by incorporating requirements from the user perspective, with user companies including Facebook, Inc. as the implementing agents. CTC concluded the Solution Provider Agreement with the Open Compute Project Foundation and become the first Solution Provider in Japan.
