Recommended System Configuration:
Minimum System Configuration:
Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology with Solid Edge Embedded Client (SEEC) continues its implementation of Teamcenter's Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and File Management System (FMS) and demonstrates the ever increasing value of the Solid Edge product. This implementation can be used with Teamcenter's 4-Tier deployment or it can be configured to be used with a Teamcenter 2-Tier deployment.
In a 4-Tier deployment, only the client application executes on the users' workstation; the Enterprise tier, database, volume, and other resource tier components are executed on the server giving improved performance for customers working in a high-latency WAN environment.
In a 2-Tier deployment, the Teamcenter Enterprise tier executes on the users' workstation with the client application and is the recommended deployment option for customers working in a low-latency or LAN environment. The implementation of Teamcenter's SOA provides separation between Solid Edge/SEEC and the Teamcenter server process, providing the maximum in available memory for the Solid Edge/SEEC application. This deployment option adds scalability because each client workstation is responsible for the Teamcenter server process and this process then communicates with the Resource tier. Note, the Solid Edge Embedded Client setup configures SEEC for a 4-Tier deployment. If a 2-Tier deployment is required, it is configured after the application is installed. For more details on 2-tier, refer to the Configuring Solid Edge Embedded Client for 2-Tier Deployment section of this readme file.)
Note: A single Teamcenter environment can support both Solid Edge/SEEC 4-Tier and 2-Tier deployments. Then, your decision on which deployment option is best is based on the Clients connectivity to the Data Center.
Note: The synchronization of the Solid Edge Assembly occurrence properties with Teamcenter will default to FALSE. If this functionality was TRUE in Solid Edge V20 or is set to TRUE following the installation of SEEC Administrator, the value will not be changed. See the Miscellaneous Information section for more details.
In addition to SOA/FMS, many other new features have been added to this release, all of which continue the focus on implementing state-of-the-art technology with outstanding usability. For a complete list of Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology enhancements, start Solid Edge and choose "What's New" from the Help menu or choose the "What's New" topic under the "Solid Edge ST Release Notes" available on the Support Web Page at http://support.ugs.com/docs/solid-edge.html
The Teamcenter Express V4 installation kit includes the Solid Edge Overlay Template.
Teamcenter Express includes all the necessary Solid Edge Overlay Template details to complete a new installation or upgrade. See the Teamcenter Express documentation for installation and supported upgrade details.
Once the Teamcenter Express installation is complete, there is still a requirement to install the Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator before you attempt to use Solid Edge/SEEC. The Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator installation uses the Teamcenter 2-Tier RAC client installation and delivers prerequisite files to the Teamcenter data directory and optionally, it can load your Solid Edge templates. The user installing SEEC Administrator must have write access to both the Teamcenter application directory (TC_ROOT) and the Teamcenter Data directory (TC_DATA). For this reason, it is recommended that this installation be performed on the server machine where Teamcenter 2-Tier RAC is installed and the 4-Tier infrastructure is configured/running.
Note: See Preparing for the Installation and Installing SEEC Administrator in the Installing Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator with Teamcenter 2007.1 (unified architecture) section for additional details.
The Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator installation is required for Teamcenter. The Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator installation kit includes the Solid Edge Overlay Template. This template is used by the Teamcenter Environment Manager (TEM) and is required for upgrades to Teamcenter 2007.1 or new installations of Teamcenter 2007.1. Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator should be installed on the Teamcenter server whenever possible.
The Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator installation uses the Teamcenter 2-Tier RAC client installation and delivers prerequisite files to the Teamcenter data directory, and can optionally load Solid Edge templates. The user installing SEEC Administrator must have write access to both the Teamcenter application directory (TC_ROOT) and the Teamcenter Data directory (TC_DATA).

Note: See the section Silent Installation of Solid Edge Embedded Client Administrator for silent installation instructions.
Solid Edge Embedded Client supports a single installation of Solid Edge on the client workstation. Remove all previous installations of Solid Edge Embedded Client and Solid Edge before continuing with a new release.
A Teamcenter Rich Application Client (RAC) is expected to be installed on the Workstation to support the activities of an Author. This RAC client installation will deliver and configure the Teamcenter FMS client. This must be installed and functional before installing Solid Edge Embedded Client. Both the Teamcenter 2-Tier and 4-Tier RAC installations deliver FMS. Once this Teamcenter task is complete, the Solid Edge Embedded Client installation steps outlined below are performed on each of the Solid Edge client workstation.
Teamcenter Express V2 introduced Express Translation Services (ETS) as a server-side product. If Solid Edge support is required, install Solid Edge on the Server before installing this option. DO NOT run the SEEC Client setup on the server.
Before you Uninstall the Previous Release:
Prerequisite:
Before You Run Setup:
Defining the Teamcenter Database:
Solid Edge Embedded Client implements Teamcenter's SOA framework. Setup now requires a Teamcenter Uniform Resource Locator (URL) and it is this Teamcenter Database URL that SEEC uses to determine the specific Teamcenter's 4-Tier infrastructure to connect or communicate to. The (3) pieces of information you need to know before running SEEC Client setup are:
Note: Solid Edge Standard Parts installations must be maintained and managed with one and only one Teamcenter Database.
Note: Validate
your server configuration using the Teamcenter Web client. In a web browser,
test your Teamcenter Database URL by
typing:
http://myteamcenter.solidedge.com:8080/tc/webclient where you substitute
"myteamcenter.solidedge.com" with your server name.
The Solid Edge Embedded Client installation must be installed on each workstation that requires access to Teamcenter-managed Solid Edge data.
Once the Solid Edge Embedded Client is successfully loaded, you are ready to use Teamcenter to manage your Solid Edge documents in a 4-Tier implementation. If a 2-Tier deployment is required, see section Configuring Solid Edge Embedded Client for a 2-Tier Deployment.
Warning: The Teamcenter Rich Application Client delivers and configures FMS. This must be complete before attempting to run Solid Edge with SEEC.
Warning: Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology delivers a new set of Solid Edge Templates. Based on an installation choice, a list of available templates is built and presented in the Create section of the Solid Edge startup screen. This choice should be considered with the templates that will be loaded into Teamcenter so the Create list of templates presented at Solid Edge startup screen is also available as managed templates. If this does not occur, the user will need to use the Edit Create Options to edit the list.
Note: See the section Silent installation of Solid Edge Embedded Client for silent installation instructions.
Select Start => Programs => Solid Edge ST => Solid Edge
The SEEC Client setup requires the user to enter a 4-Tier Teamcenter Database Definition. Then, SEEC only requires Teamcenter FMS, which was installed on the workstation by a 2-Tier or a 4-Tier Teamcenter RAC installation. If an SEEC 2-Tier deployment is required, SEEC would be configured after the Solid Edge Embedded Client setup was completed using the Define Teamcenter Database application. A Teamcenter 2-Tier RAC installation must be completed before you run the application Define Database Definintion!
Complete the steps outlined in the section Installing Solid Edge Embedded Client and then execute the following steps.
Prerequisite:
Warning: You cannot deliver a Teamcenter 4-Tier client for an SEEC 2-Tier deployment.
SEEC as a 2-Tier Client:
Note: You can define only (1) 2-Tier database definition. You can define (n) 4-Tier database definitions. However, you must verify that FMS was configured to support your deployment! FMS is a critical piece of your deployment infrastructure.
Warning: SEEC Client can run as either 4-Tier or 2-Tier client. However, the cache is on the selected Teamcenter Database URL. Therefore, a 4-Tier connection DOES NOT use the same physical cache as a 2-Tier connection for the same Teamcenter Database and User ID.
The bulk migration process will change in an upcoming Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology Update. This section will describe the process for the Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology release.
Note: The Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology Help documents Solid Edge ST Update. This section will document what is available in Solid Edge ST release.
The Solid Edge Data Prep Utilities should continue to be used to prepare your unmanaged content for import to Teamcenter.
For Solid Edge ST release only, the Data Prep process begins with Data Import Process Guide.
- The Data Import Process Guide,
Data Import Process
Guide.bat
contains a consolidated set of options for performing the entire data
preparation and import process including performing a dry run of the Add to
Teamcenter utility, creating ordered lists of files from your unmanaged data,
and importing the unmanaged data into the Teamcenter managed environment.
Note: The Solid Edge to Teamcenter Import Data Preparation Utilities documentation was incorporated into the Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide, where this documentation supports the upcoming Solid Edge ST Update.
While using SEEC as a 4-Tier application, you must configure the Teamcenter middle tier with enough Teamcenter Business Logic Server processes to handle the incoming requests. You cannot arbitrarily set these numbers, as this will adversely impact reliability and performance. If the specified numbers are set too low, you will see reliability issues with Solid Edge operations that interact with Teamcenter, such File-Open, File-Save, and so forth. If the numbers are set too high, then performance is impacted. The following information is provided to help educate and guide you in configuring your server processes.
For Teamcenter, the Server Manager configuration is managed in %TC_ROOT%\pool_manager\serverPool*.properties file. The file entries in which you are most interested are PROCESS_MAX, PROCESS_WARM, and PROCESS_TARGET.
For example: PROCESS_MAX=30
In this example, the total number of servers will never exceed 30.
PROCESS_MAX should always be larger than PROCESS_TARGET and PROCESS_WARM.
For example: PROCESS_WARM=1
This ensures that one (1) server is always ready (warm), in addition to those being used.
For example: PROCESS_TARGET=0700 3, 1700 2
This value sets the target number of server processes as 3 between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. and as 2 between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
If the number of server processes is below the specified target, then warm servers are added to reach this number. In this case, the number of warm servers exceeds the minimum, so none are added. If the number of server processes exceeds the specified target, only the minimum number of warm servers is maintained and servers are terminated as they time out.
For example, if you expect 10 concurrent users, you would want to set
PROCESS_WARM=1
PROCESS_TARGET=0000 11
This would keep 10 servers running and 1 ready (warm) at all times.
Depending on the server load and activity, these values should be modified. However, this must be considered with respect to the amount of physical memory and the other work this server is expected to perform. You should also consider the following:
For Teamcenter Express, the Server Manager configuration can be managed via a web page. For example, http://myteamcenter.solidedge.com:8080/tc/admin, where you would substitute your server details in the URL. After a successful login, the Global Configuration page is displayed. Select the Server Manager pool in the Server Manager Instances section. (State should be running.) The Pool Configuration is displayed and can be updated using Edit. Here, Process Target is the parameter of interest.
Consult the Teamcenter documentation for additional details on other parameters.

You must install the new templates if you wish to use the new functionality introduced in Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology!
Solid Edge with Synchronous Technology delivers a new set of templates. The Administrator should add these new templates to their set of Templates and use SEEC Administrator's Import Solid Edge Templates feature to import them to Teamcenter. Then, based on a new option called User Type, the user is presented a list of available templates.
Skip this section if you are migrating from Solid Edge Embedded Client V18, V19 or V20. You can continue to use your existing Teamcenter managed templates.
If you are using the former Solid Edge integration to Teamcenter (Edge Manager), SEEC has implemented a new process for managed Solid Edge templates and the Administrator must manually migrate your company's templates forward. This step must be completed before the installation of the SEEC Administrator so this new unmanaged folder can be selected at the time of installation. The steps to migrate your Edge Manager templates follows:
Note: Section Installing SEEC Administrator details the installation process, and in Step 4 of the installation, you would navigate to this new unmanaged "root" folder created above.
Attribute mapping defines what document properties exchanged between Solid Edge and Teamcenter. In Teamcenter, the key attributes normally used to track part numbers and revisions are Item ID and Revision ID. Each of these Teamcenter attributes are limited to 32 characters. In addition to these two properties, Teamcenter also requires an Item Type and Item Name. SEEC additionally maps Dataset Description, providing another property to capture additional detail about the specific Solid Edge document. Your unmanaged data's properties should be reviewed and prepared for importing before the content is uploaded to Teamcenter.
SEEC defines the following property mappings:

1 Teamcenter 2007.1 provides an option to expand the String length to 128.
2 Dataset Name is Required, but if it is empty, SEEC will use the default of Item ID/Revision
(there is no asterisk on CPD)
The key properties that are automatically mapped to Teamcenter attributes are displayed on the Project tab of the Properties dialog box in Solid Edge. To display the dialog box, go to Application menu, -> Properties -> File Properties.
Note: Solid Edge ST released new functionality for the Solid Edge property called Material. See Solid Edge Help and Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide for more details.
When you import the unmanaged files into the managed environment, blank Solid Edge Document Number properties are automatically assigned an Item ID by Teamcenter. It is recommended that you populate the Document Number, Revision Number, and Project Name fields before loading your data into Teamcenter. If these fields are properly populated, your Teamcenter database will be more accurately populated.
Note: When unmanaged 3D documents using the same Document Number property are imported into Teamcenter, a unique document number is assigned to each 3D file being imported. As a result, in Teamcenter there can only be one Solid Edge 3D Dataset per Item Revision. However, there can be multiple Solid Edge Draft Datasets per Item Revision. For your deployment, you must decide if you are going to save your Solid Edge Draft documents to the same Item Revision as the Solid Edge 3D content it defines or if you are going to save your Solid Edge Draft documents to a separate Item.
You can create Solid Edge Custom properties to map to Teamcenter attributes. Refer to the Solid Edge Help topic, Create Custom Document Properties or the Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide for additional details. Run Solid Edge and choose Help Index for links.
Warning: When defining the attribute mapping definition, SEEC requires the explicit Teamcenter Property. (SEEC does not support the short or abbreviated forms for Teamcenter Properties.)
Warning: You must define an attribute mapping for Model_Type before you attempt to save any Synchronous documents to Teamcenter. With Teamcenter Express V4, a new Item Revision Master Form property was created. These details are outlined in the Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide. A link to this guide is available from Solid Edge Help. Other Teamcenter releases should follow this implementation, where this property is at the Item Revision level, not the Item level of the data model. Your Teamcenter Administrator should consider the impact of any custom Item Types.
Teamcenter Express V4 introduced a new attribute to address the new
requirement for Model Type. The
attribute TCX_Model_Type was added to the Item Revision Master Form for Item
Types equal to Item and Standard. This property exists to manage the process of
converting Traditional documents to Synchronous. For that purpose, it was designed to be used with a Teamcenter
Query and it would not be shown on the Form. The following Teamcenter Express V4 mapping
example would be used applied to Dataset Types of SE Part and SE Assembly.
Model_Type : ItemRevision.GRM(IMAN_master_form,ItemRevision
Master).TCX_Model_Type /master=cad /description="Traditional or Synchronous"
During the installation of the Solid Edge Embedded Client, setup queried for the definition of your Teamcenter Database. Once the Solid Edge Embedded Client is successfully loaded, the Teamcenter Database definition was used to configure the workstation (all users) and you are ready to use Teamcenter to manager your Solid Edge documents. Solid Edge V20 introduced the ability to define multiple Teamcenter Databases. If you would like to configure additional databases for use with Solid Edge Embedded Client, from the Start menu, select Start => Programs => Solid Edge ST => SEEC => Define Teamcenter Databases.
Once yOnce your initial installation of Solid Edge Embedded Client is complete, use the utility to maintain an accurate list of Teamcenter databases by adding, modifying, or deleting entries. Additional information regarding the utility is available in Appendix B - Configuring the Solid Edge Embedded Client Environment, of the Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide for Administrators and Clients document, SEECUsersGuide.pdf, installed in the ...\Solid Edge ST\Program\ResDlls\0009 subfolder.
Teamcenter preferences are now stored in the Teamcenter Database and these preferences can be viewed using RAC (Tools:Options:Index or Search). A complete listing is provided in the Solid Edge Embedded Client User's Guide for Administrators and Clients document, SEECUsersGuide.pdf, installed in the ...\Solid Edge ST\Program\ResDlls\0009 subfolder. Following are important preference details.
Preference SEEC_Property_Synchronize_AsmOcc controls the synchronization of the Solid Edge Assembly occurrence properties with Teamcenter. With Solid Edge ST, the preference will be added and set to FALSE (Solid Edge/SEEC will not write Assembly occurrence property data to Teamcenter). If this functionality was TRUE in Solid Edge V20 or is set to TRUE following the installation of SEEC Administrator, the value will not be changed.
The following list of preferences were not loaded, but effect the SEEC as described below.
