CTC Commences Sales of Symantec's Integrated Appliance Product Exclusively for Backup for the First Time in Japan

Providing “Symantec NetBackup 5230” for Companies that Perform Large-Scale System Operations

Jun 05, 2014 ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation

ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corporation (headquartered in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Satoshi Kikuchi, President & CEO; hereinafter “CTC”) today commences sales of “Symantec NetBackup 5230” (hereinafter “NetBackup 5230”), an integrated dedicated backup appliance product, provided by Symantec Japan, Inc. (headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo; Hiroaki Kawamura, President & CEO; hereinafter “Symantec”), for the first time in Japan. The NetBackup 5230, a dedicated backup tool with the latest version of NetBackup software embedded in the hardware, is available in four models according to storage capacity: 14TB, 28TB, 40TB, and 76TB. Selling mainly to data center operators and companies that perform large-scale system operations, it provides designing, building, and maintenance support. The 14TB model, which is the minimum configuration, will be sold at 15 million yen (tax excluded), and aims to achieve sales of one billion yen over the next three years.

With the rapid increase of data volume and the spread of virtualization in recent years, backup environments and administrative tasks for systems have begun to diversify. Procurement of hardware for servers and storage and verifying the combination with OS and middleware must be performed at the time of building a new backup environment. Also, as business is accelerated by global competition and to support the Business Continuity Plan (BCP), rapid recovery in the case of system shutdown and continuing operation are required.

Because the NetBackup 5230 is an appliance product with the OS, management software, and NetBackup software already installed, the combination verification, which has previously been performed individually by engineers, is not required. It also reduces the process of designing and configuration of the servers, storage, and OS, and shortens the construction time by about half.

During operations, efficient backup is provided with the following functions:

  • Reduces backup storage requirements with the deduplication technique※1 .
  • Achieves full backup in the time required for an incremental backup with the incremental forever backup※2 .
  • Enables a quick restoration with replicated backup data at the time of a disaster or system failure.

CTC has been selected as partner for the initial sales of the product because of its long partnership with Symantec, and its ability to promptly provide the full lineup of NetBackup products, along with the technological capabilities of its engineers and maintenance support. CTC provides comprehensive IT services from consulting to system construction for disaster measures, including backup, and offers solutions to BCP and other issues facing customers. Taking advantage of the expertise built through its IT services over the years, CTC will support the business development of our customers.

The following comments are from Symantec Japan, Inc.

Symantec is pleased to be able to provide the Symantec NetBackup 5230, its integrated appliance exclusively for backup, through this partnership with CTC. I am confident that with the increased number of customers in need of efficient data storage, CTC can meet the needs of customers with its technological expertise and experience in maintenance support for its backup products.

  • *1 Deduplication technique : A method used for the management of backup systems. This technique is used to reduce and save the overall storage space by locating identical data within the entire storage area, eliminating redundant data, and backing up only the changes.
  • *2 Incremental forever backup : A method used to continue operations only with incremental backups after performing a full backup once at the system building stage. A full backup is created internally by synthesizing incremental backups acquired daily with the backup data up to the previous day at high speed. This enables an operation that acquires a full backup with the time required for an incremental backup.
